This guide provides information on each position within the Department.
Position Descriptions
1. Fire Chief
The Fire Chief provides administrative direction and leadership for all Fire Department functions, operations, and personnel through the supervision of staff and a review of their activities.
Responsibilities include reviewing the general operation of the department to determine efficiency, providing direction on major projects or problem areas, planning for the future, developing and implementing policies and procedures and providing policy guidance. Also, the Fire Chief is responsible, through study and consultation with county officials, for developing recommendations for the protection of life and property in the Mount Pleasant Area of Responsibility.
2. Deputy Fire Chief
Under the direction of the Fire Chief, the Deputy Fire Chief plans, organizes, directs, and administers all operations of the fire department assigned to him/her by the Fire Chief within the authority delegated. Also, in the absence of the Fire Chief, the Deputy Fire Chief shall perform ALL applicable duties of the Fire Chief sufficiently until arrival or return of the Fire Chief. The Deputy Fire Chief may also perform the same duties as a Firefighter.
3. Captain (if appointed)
Under the direction of the Deputy Fire Chief and/or Fire Chief, plans, organizes, coordinates, and directs the emergency and non-emergency activities of the department; command emergency response scenes; directs and performs a variety of staff support functions; plans, organizes, coordinates, and directs training, recruitment, fire inspection, and prevention programs; and performs related work as assigned. A Captain may also perform the same duties as a Firefighter.
4. Lieutenant (if appointed)
Under the direction of the Captain (if appointed), deploys, supervises and reviews the work of firefighters, takes command of fires and other emergency incidents within the jurisdiction unless relieved by a Captain or Chief Officer, performs the full range of emergency response duties as a member of a response team; coordinates and participates in non-emergency inspection, training, maintenance, and related activities; assists Fire Captains in providing administrative support for specified departmental programs; and performs related work as assigned. A Lieutenant may also perform the same duties as a Firefighter.
5. Firefighters
Under the direction of a Lieutenant, Captain (if appointed), or Chief Officer, provides direct services, individually and as a member of a team in response to fire, rescue, hazmat, and other incidents. Firefighters are certified by the State of Florida as Firefighter I or Firefighter II.
6. Probationary Firefighter
Under the direction of a Firefighter, Lieutenant, Captain (if appointed), or Chief Officer, provides direct services, individually and as a member of a team in response to fire, rescue, hazmat, and other incidents.
The Probationary Firefighter has not completed entry-level firefighter coursework and may not be permitted to participate in structural firefighting activities that require the individual to enter or be near the building, enclosed structure, vehicle, or vessel. Would be considered in a Firefighter Support role until the training is completed.
7. Firefighter Support Members
Under the direction of a Lieutenant, Captain (if appointed), or Chief Officer, provides direct support services to the Department and the Department’s personnel individually or as a member of a team. Firefighter Support Members can be utilized in many different roles to support the Department both administratively and in response to fire, rescue, hazmat, and other incidents.
Firefighter Support Members do not actively engage in fire suppression, direct rescue operations or other situations that would be considered a direct threat. However, they can assist Firefighters with pump operations, movement of equipment, rehabilitation, directing traffic and other operations outside of the hot zone as determined by the Incident Commander.
In accordance with SOG Admin-02, All Fire Department personnel will be authorized to utilize emergency lights in their personally owned vehicles to respond to the Fire Station or to the incident location whichever is closer.
